The June Program will be Quilt Show Prep & Challenge & Veterans Medallion Challenge Voting

The Show Will Go On!

The program for the June guild meeting will shine a spotlight on a few of the many activities and features of “Quilts by the Sea, 2019.” We hope you’ll enjoy hearing about what will happen at the Children’s Corner, the Boutique, the Guild Merchandise booth, Sponsored Ribbons, the Small Quilt Auction, and the list of this year’s vendors and their specialties.

In addition, you’ll learn (or re-learn) where to sew on that pesky paper label and once again hear that a hanging sleeve must be on every quilt entered in the show (except miniatures, wearables, and home accessories).

Extra time will be available for you to sign up to help during judging (July 30-31), setup on August 1, and working at the show (August 2-3, as you already know!)

Finally, you’ll get to admire and vote on the veterans’ challenge medallions. What a wonderful display they will make!

Quilts by the Sea is always magical but doesn’t happen by magic—it will take every one of you. Come to the June meeting and get some glimpses of the stardust to come!

Veterans Medallion Challenge

Blocks need to be turned in at the June meeting to be included in the voting.  Be sure to come to the meeting and vote for your favorites.  We will also have the voting at the July meeting.

Veteran’s Quilt Project

A Note from Phoebe

I would personally like to thank Twy and Virginia for their work setting up the May 11 Veterans Quilt Sew Day.  They had a wonderful assortment of blocks and bolts of fabric for the attendees to select from in order for each of us to put together a quilt top.  There were only 11-12 of us who came and we are looking forward to their next Newport Sew Day.  Hopefully more will show up out of our 199 members.  It’s great fun, sewing, visiting and eating – I was on a high from it for 2 days!

There were 11 quilters (one taking photo)  who attended the workshop.  Thank all of you who attended & helped.

Community Quilters

Community Quilters will not be meeting in June.

Finishing School

Finishing School will be meeting June 27 from 10 to 4 at the Carriage House at the Lincoln County Historical Museum at 545 SW 9th St, Newport. It is a great time to work on a project without being interrupted. You may bring your machine or hand work we have an iron there for you to use. You may come at any time and stay as long as you like. Bring a sack lunch or go out what ever you would rather do. It is also a great way to get to know other guild members and get help on a project that you need advice on. Fun time is had by all.

Quilt Show

Raffle Tickets  2019 Raffle Quilt

Raffle tickets need to be turned in before the Quilt Show.  July meeting will be the last meeting before Quilt Show. I will be gone from July 27- Aug 3 so please arrange for money and stub turn in before then. There is still plenty of time to sell tickets and please help pass along the rack cards to publicize our Quilt Show.

Quilt Sleeve

ALL entries in the quilt show MUST have a 4″ hanging sleeve (with the exception of miniatures, household items, pillows, and garments).  Instructions for making the sleeve can be found on page 8 of the membership directory.

Quilt Registration

Please get your quilts registered as soon as possible.  The Registration deadline is July 5th.  Here’s a link to the Category Decision Tree.

http://www.oregoncoastalquilters.org/PDF/CategoryDecisionTree.pdf

There’s been some confusion about the Mixed/Other Category.  This category is not for quilts that are both pieced and appliqued.  If your quilt does have both piecing and applique put it in Piecing if it’s more than 50% pieced, or Appliqued if it’s more than 50% appliqued.  If it is 50/50, choose the technique you want to emphasize.  The Mixed/Other category is for quilts that are embroidered or painted with pigment or thread or unusual such as whole cloth quilts.  If you have any questions please contact me.

Nancy Blanck and I will be available at 5:00 before the June meeting to photograph quilts and register them if you are unable to register them online yourself.  After that time call me and I’ll meet you in late June at Knotty Ladies in Newport.

Small Quilt Auction

Just a reminder that we need lots of small quilts for the Silent Auction at our show.  These little quilts can be any size from 12” to a maximum of 18” and can be any technique or pattern that you find appealing.  Half of the funds raised will go to a selected charity, and the other half to our guild.  Please have them ready by the June meeting so that we can display them at the Newport Library in July.  The public will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite quilt, and the maker of the winning quilt gets to choose a charity that will receive $50.  Please remember to include a label on the back of your quilt, and a “Buy it Now” price, as well as your suggested opening bid.

Many thanks to all of you.
