Mister Domestic

PROGRAM TITLE: Let Go to Find Joy

Walk through of Mister Domestic’s creative journey as he uses each technique to find how he finds and shares joy in quilting.

WORKSHOP TITLE: Improv Flower Block

Embrace the wonky as you learn Mister Domestic’s improv technique to create an abstract flower block.

Mathew Boudreaux (AKA Mister Domestic), presently resides in the Pacific Northwest with his husband, their 3-year-old daughter Helena, and two cats Jordan & Camden. He was originally from Houston, TX and now calls Camas, Washington home. During the day, he works in the pharmaceutical industry specializing in oncology, but is an artist by heart and has jokingly referred to himself as an artist gypsy.

He learned to sew as a kid but never really got into it until he had a daughter. At almost 40 he felt that his taste-level had arrived and that he could make some pretty neat-o digs. Before Helena could even crawl his husband bought him a couple sewing classes at Modern Domestic in Portland which was the perfect jumpstart that he needed because he hasn’t stopped since!

The workshop will be on Friday, October 11th, at Atonement Lutheran Church, beginning at 10 a.m., the cost is $30.00 for OCQG members and $40 for non-members for the class. Supplies each person needs to bring are: 6 fat quarters of solid color fabric (2 coordinating colors for the flower center, 2 colors for the petals and 2 colors for the leaves). Also needed are a sewing machine & thread for piecing, rotary equipment (ruler, mat & rotary cutter).

2021 Raffle Quilt

It’s time to bring your design for the 2021 Raffle Quilt to the October Guild Meeting for presentation to the members. A complete idea needs to be presented and the presenter needs to be willing to see the project through to the completion of the quilt.

We hope we have several quilts from which to choose, as we are scheduled to vote on which one will be the 2021 Raffle Quilt.

You’re Being Challenged to Challenge the Guild!

Didn’t the patriotic medallions make a wonderful display at the quilt show? It hardly seems possible, but it’s time for another challenge to be selected by the Executive Board.

If you have a challenge idea, please bring it to the October 17 board meeting (10 a.m., Carriage House of the Lincoln County History Center, Newport). You should come in person so that the board can clarify any questions, and written copies of your proposal are also helpful. (There are about 20 board members.)

Usually, challenge entries are size-limited (20”-30” on a side) so that there will be room to display them in the quilt show. Remember, if your challenge is selected by the board, you must coordinate the submissions by communicating the “rules” and requesting entries at each meeting, accepting the entries in June, and keeping track of the June/July voting. There are special ribbons for first, second, and third place; these are often handmade but that’s not a requirement. The challenge chairperson becomes a member of the Executive Board that year too, and is expected to attend those meetings.

OCQG has had some wonderful challenges over the years, and hopefully 2020 will carry on the tradition. Questions? Ask a former challenge coordinator (Ginger Dale, Becky Mershon) for answers. Please—challenge the guild with your challenge!

October: Halloween

Teecia Cornelius will be collecting 1-3 fat quarters at the October meeting. We pool the fabrics collected and have a drawing. Winner takes all!

Membership

One new member joined at our September 12th meeting: Julia Bostwick from Newport. Welcome, Julia! Eighty-five members attended along with two guests.

An updated list of new members and changes to our directory was handed out. This sheet included the user name and password to the e directory. Please remember: the password for the e-directory is not to be shared and will not be in print in the new membership booklet.”

We had a good turn out for our September Veteran’s Project Sew Day.

Veterans Project News

There will be a presentation of 7-8 quilts at Atonement Lutheran on Sunday, September 29th at 10 a.m. A work party will be held at Atonement Lutheran on October 18th. Pillowcases are needed for the quilts.

The Veteran’s Nomination Form is now available online (http://oregoncoastalquilters.org/fillable-forms/). The form is at the bottom of the list. Use this form to name a veteran for a quilt from the Veteran’s Quilt Project and then give it to Ginger Dale or Twy Hoch.

Community Quilters

Please come out and support your Community Quilters Committee as we meet on the 1st Thursday, October 3. Many of the Bayshore group will be away at their annual retreat in Bandon, including Sue and Elizabeth. We need some new hands on deck! Lindanne Perdue will be running the show that day, and the emphasis will be on getting quilt tops sandwiched. It is always a fun time at Ruth’s Family Fabrics in Waldport, and this activity will require working together as teams. Would you believe we have over 20 tops that need to be made into quilt bundles? I hope that you all are very proud of our membership for all the good work you have done this year. I will have some numbers to report at the next meeting, and I think you will be duly impressed.

Just a reminder that the Hospice Quilt Auction will be taking place next Monday, 9/30, at the Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital Education Room, 930 SW Abbey St., in Newport, from 10 to 3. I know some of our members donated quilts to this cause, including 8 from Community Quilters. If you are okay with this, I would like to know how many quilts each of you have donated so I can include them in our yearly total. Please just email me the number if you are okay with your donations being included in our count.

Oct 12th will be our last documentation for the year. If anyone has quilts from the show they want documented call or email Twy.

2020 Retreat

To the Retreat Quilters: An email went out to everyone regarding the balances/PIF, roommate info, etc. If you did not receive an email please contact Georgia. If you have not paid your $50 non-refundable deposit please send it to Georgia. We have 5 people on the Wait List so if anything comes up please let us know ASAP. Before you know it Quilting in the Garden will be here. We are looking forward to seeing all of you.

Finishing School

Finishing School will be meeting on October 24 from 10 to 4 at the Carriage House at the Lincoln County Historical Museum at 545 SW 9th St, Newport. It is a great time to work on a project without being interrupted. You may bring your machine or hand work we will have an iron there for you to use. You may come at any time and stay as long as you like. Bring a sack lunch or go out what ever you would rather do. It is a great way to get to know other guild members and get help on a project that you need advice on. Fun time is had by all. This will be our last Finishing School meeting for this year. We will start meeting again in January 2020.

Gems of the Ocean II – a themed Art Quilt Show

We invite you to show us your best of Ocean themed art quilts.

Gems of the Ocean II is a juried show sponsored by the 501©3, non-profit, Polly Plumb Productions, Yachats, Oregon. The Call to Artists website is: gemsoftheocean.org. The show is February 14-15-16, 2020 in Yachats, Oregon. The last Gems of the Ocean show in 2017 accepted 103 out of 123 entries from 3 countries.
