December 2019 General Meeting Minutes

OREGON COASTAL QUILTERS GUILD GENERAL MEETING DECEMBER 12, 2019

The meeting was called to order at 1:03pm by President, Diane Tillotson.

Announcements

Thank you notes were received from the Longview Fishing Club for Veterans Quilts.

Paul Stangeland thanked the guild for the Veterans Quilt he received at the Atonement Lutheran ceremony.  Thank you notes for Community Quilts were read.

Debbie Mosley reported that there are quilts and a wall hanging that have been on display at the Rec Center that need to be picked up.

Minutes

Jan McQueen moved for approval of the November General Meeting minutes.  Motion was seconded by Debbie Mosley and passed by a voice vote.

Welcome – Diane thanked the membership for a delicious potluck meal, a time shared with good friends, fellowship and great conversation.

2020 Officers were introduced: President – Diane Tillotson, Vice President – Merralee Wilson, Treasurer- Janet Sylvester, Co-Secretary – Toni Brodie & Marian Brown.

Committees

Documentation will be held on January 11th in Newport and February 15th in Lincoln City.

2021 Raffle Quilt – Melissa Hollenbeck showed her progress on the quilt background and asked about a sailboat on the quilt which was approved by the membership.  

2020 Challenge Quilt – Jean Amundson passed around a sign-up sheet and announced that Velma Freudenthal will be co-chair.  Theme is “Votes For Women” which celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the amendment giving women the right to vote.  Rules are posted on the BLOG.

Community Quilters – Sue Stephenson reported the Good News that we have distributed 390 quilts this year!  The Bad News is that only 20 quilts remain, so keep on quilting.  No January meeting, next Community Quilters meeting will be in February.

Hospitality – Barbara Kinzel invited the members to purchase tickets and attend the Children’s Advocacy Gala on February 15th where several quilts will be auctioned.

Membership – Ruth Johnson reported 60 members present, 2 guests, 1 new member Holly Byrnes, 72 paid memberships for 2020.  Remember to pay your dues by the January General Meeting.

Programs/Workshops – Jane Szabo announced there will be a Jelly Roll Bag Workshop by Gail Chipman on March 13 & 14.  Sign-up available today.

2020 Retreat – Georgia Sabourin reported they have 60 signed up, no one currently on the waiting list.

Updates will be posted on the BLOG and today is the deadline for the final payment.  There will be 2 Games at the retreat. Jan McQueen announced the first game requires 2 coordinating fat quarters, quilt shop quality, wrapped.  Second game will have 100% participation.

2020 Quilt Show Featured Quilter – Nan Scott and Darcy de la Rosa presented the Featured Quilter by giving an explanation about the “Legend of the Shoe Bag” which was started in 2006 by Phoebe Hein  and then passed on to Shirley Gilmore in 2007.  The bag contained “Glittered Red High Heels” for the Featured Quilter to wear … the shoes are gone but the shoe bag continues to be passed on.  Darcy announced that Jane Szabo is the 2020 Featured Quilter and presented her the bag which contained a tierra, a wand, picture stand, guest book, mug rug and chocolates as well as a beautiful bouquet of flowers.  Jane was given a resounding round of applause, congratulations Jane!

Treasurers Report – Janet Sylvester reminded members to turn in reimbursement forms before the end of the year so that checks can be issued before the year end closing.

Program – Jane Szabo led the group in a game of Quilt Trivia  mini games.  First, our guild, then quilt history, and finally, quilting knowledge.  

Food Share Donation – The generosity of OCQG members has once again been shown by the contributions at Thursday’s potluck.  $363 was collected in cash and checks for Food Share of Lincoln County, these funds will be leveraged many times over in purchasing foods in bulk from their sources.  The non-perishable items collected will go the the Newport Food Pantry. Thank you for helping to bring joy to those in need.

Table Topper Drawings – Winners of the table topper trees and fat squares were – Bev Ohngren, Lisa Hall, Gloria Zirges, Joan Johnson, Marylynn Kleeman, Diane Tillotson, Judy Line, Jan Hoffman, Sherilee Stevens and Georgia Sabourin.

  • Jane Szabo showed a star filled red/white/blue Veterans Quilt.
  • Linda Reeve shared 2 Christmas Tree Placemats, a Christmas Quilt and a Colored Squares quilt.
  • Teecia Cornelius showed the Samaritan House Tea Raffle Quilt, a Snowman Pillow in shades of blue and a Polar Bear Christmas Quilt.
  • Sally Morris shared a Christmas Placemat
  • Twy Hoch showed a Farm Quilt with a farm scenes on the back, quilt is a housewarming gift.
  • Nan Scott shared a Cloth Book about animals made for her Grandson.
  • Merralee Wilson showed the group the quilt top in shades of blues and purples that will be made into the President’s quilt.

  • Viki West won a ruler stand.

SABLE – Teecia Cornelius announced next month is Silver & Gold

Winners of Christmas Colors were Lana Pries, Ruth Hutmacher and Lisa Hall.

Members were wished a Happy Holiday Season and Safe Travels!  Meeting was adjourned at 

2:45pm.
