Oregon Coastal Quilters Guild

January 14, 2021

The meeting, via Zoom, was called to order by President Diane Tillotson at 1:00 p.m.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Janet Sylvester is home and doing better, although she must be careful of her right side.  Nan Scott has transferred all treasurer records to Janet, the sole treasurer, on a go-forward basis.

Diane Tillotson, our out-going President, wants to thank all guild members for their support during her two-year presidency.  And she specifically thanked the out-going secretaries, Toni Brodie and Marian Brown, for their hard work.

INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS:

The following guild members took the oath of office and were installed as the 2021-2022 officers:

President, Meralee Wilson Vice-President, Sue Stephenson

Secretary, Barbara Kinzel Co-Treasurers, Janet Sylvester, Nan Scott

Diane Tillotson then turned over the meeting to the new president, Meralee Wilson.

FURTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS:  

As long as the General Meetings continue on Zoom, they will be at 1:00 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month.  When circumstances change, and Covid-19 is no longer a threat, the Guild will return to the traditional times.

A motion to amend the December 10, 2020 General Meeting minutes was made to include information regarding the Challenge Quilt.  The motion was seconded and passed.

COMMITTEE ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The Quilt Show Committee announced they do not know if it will be possible because of the pandemic to put on the 2021 Quilt Show.  However, the Rec Center is reserved, and the committee chairs will be in touch with the 2020 chairs to see if they will continue their chairpersonships for the 2021 show.

The Membership Committee announced 152 members paid their dues for the 2021 year, and there are still more membership renewals coming in.  The Committee is working on the directory and has two volunteers to proofread.

The Documentation Committee is at a virtual stand-still, but the target month is September 2021.

The Challenge Quilt Committee is trying to get thirty quilts for the “Thirty Quilt” challenge.

The Raffle Quilt Committee announced it has distributed one-half of the available tickets and is reserving 2000 for the 2021 Quilt Show.

The 2022 Raffle Quilt Committee has met.

The Veteran’s Quilt Project Committee has a big “Thank You” to everyone who has worked so hard.  128 quilts were distributed in 2020 and one so far this year.  There are twenty-five on the waiting list and more than eight in the pipeline.

The 2022 Retreat Committee announced it would meet in the Spring.  There are two potential venues, and that year there will be a limit of two people to a room.

The Community Quilters announced 261 quilts were distributed in 2020.  The meetings are once a month on the first Thursday, and the Open House is scheduled for February 4, 2021 in Waldport from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and the Committee will focus on Veterans’ quilts.  There are not any kits rights now, but the Committee is working on it.  All members are welcome to come and shop for scraps, fat quarters, and other small fabric pieces for free.  Raffle tickets for the 2021 quilt will be available during the open house.

Jean Amundson announced that the 2020 Challenge Quilts would be on display at the Latimer in Tillamook, and she will let the Guild know when the center is open.  Members can check the blog for photographs.

Having no further business, Jane Szabo introduced our program and speaker.  Kathy Wylie is an international-award winning quilter who works in pattern design, fabric design, applique, domestic machine quilting, and English Paper Piecing techniques.  Kathy began knitting, sewing, and embroidery as a young girl.  She graduated from McGill University in 1984 and worked outside the home until 1994.  After she married and had two young boys, she decided to remain at home to raise her children and care for her family.  In 1994, a friend asked Kathy to participate in a quilting class with her, and Kathy was immediately hooked.  In twenty-five years, her passion has grown from a hobby to a full-time profession.  Kathy lectures and teaches through Canada and the Pacific Northwest at guilds, shops, and quilting shows.  Her accolades include being the “Artist in Residence” at the Elly Sienkiewicz Applique Academy, an instructor on the Alaskan cruise for Quilt Seminars at Sea, a guest on The Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims, she is a frequent faculty member at Quilt Canada, and a Certified Quilt Judge for the Canadian Quilter’s Association.  She identifies her quilting style as contemporary traditional and intends a message of faith and hope in each quilt she creates.  The link to her presentation, which Jane Szabo and Nan Scott will have, is available to all Guild members for fourteen days from January 14, 2021, and Guild members will receive ten percent off all products at her shop, Kathykwylie.com/shop, for fourteen days after the January 14, 2021 meeting.  The coupon code is OCQG10.

Show and Share followed Kathy’s presentation and included:

  1. Janet Childers: two quilts: The first quilt is for Janet’s first God-grandson and the second quilt for her second God-grandson.
  2. Community Quilters: two quilts.  The quilts were made from the C.Q. stash.
  3. Lisa Hall: one quilt:  Lisa’s quilt is called Mask Blossom and is made up of Covid-19 face masks in petal formation.
  4. Jan McQueen: one quilt:  Jan collected over 100 hankies over the years on her visits to antique shops, thrift stores, etc., and created “100 Happy Hankies.”  She reported the most challenging part of making the quilt was cutting each of the hankies.  
  5. Carol Nelson: three quilts:  The first quilt is titled “Chilly Willie” and is a winter wall-hanging in traditional colors.  The second quilt is titled “Winter Cardinal” and is also a wall-hanging of the same size as “Chilly Willie.”  The third project is comprised of hand-sized pillows to fill bowls at Christmas and contain traditional patterns.
  6. Pamela Potter: one quilt:  Pamela, one of the Guild’s newest members, shared a tablecloth with a poinsettia motif.
  7. Rose Shaw: one quilt: Rose made a t-shirt quilt for her son Alex and titled it “Memories of Alex” It is made up of his t-shirts, both front and back, of his cross-country runs.  The first time Rose made a t-shirt quilt, she swore she would never do it again.  This is her sixth such quilt.  Rose reports Alex loves the quilt and keeps on showing his appreciation.
  8. Sue Stephenson: two quilts:  Sue presented “Midnight Snowflakes,” a study in various shades of blue and white in which everything is hand pieced.  Sue also presented a Bayshore Challenge quilt with the friendship star in black, white, and red.  Sue reports that there was illness in her family, and she did not have the time to make all the blocks, so her friends from Bayshore stepped up and presented her with the star blocks already completed.
  9. Jane Szabo: one quilt:  Jane showed us “Dear Daughter,” a quilt in bold and primary colors she made for her daughter with many affirmations.  It is 80” x 90” and described as a “big throw.”
