It’s Show Time!
We are coming to the end of many months of preparation for our premier event of the year: Quilts by the Sea at the Newport Recreation Center August 3-4. Registration closed on July 5th with 238 quilts. The hanging committee met and decided how and where they will be displayed along with dozens more in challenges, friendship groups, and special displays. The show promises to be another stunning display of the exceptional talent in this guild. The quilt show chairs (Jackie, Jean, Janet, and Debbie) and the various sub-committees have been working hard to make sure everything goes flawlessly.
But first, this urgent message from Sue Stephenson:
As of this writing, we have 28 shifts that have not been filled. This is a big deal because everything that we do at the quilt show gets done by volunteers from our membership. Please email me at sooze@pobox.com or call my cell, 661-904-8130 and I will find a place for you to volunteer. We are going to start calling members next week who haven’t signed up if we don’t have all the positions filled. This is a huge undertaking that we don’t want to do! The signup sheet is now posted on our web, so check out our “vacancies” and call or email to volunteer! Remember, we have sitting, standing and “roaming” jobs available each day. NEW MEMBERS – grab a friend and work a shift together – or even better, sign up for a position with someone you don’t know and make a new friend! This is one of the best ways to get to know other members of our guild.

Monday, July 30 | In-take at Atonement Lutheran Church – quilts are accepted from 1-5. ALL registered items must be brought to the church this day whether judged or not. Be sure you have sewn on a hanging sleeve if applicable, a paper label on the back in the right hand corner (when looking at the BACK of the quilt) and a you have a completed insurance waiver. | Hanging sleeve instructions are on page 10 of the directory.

Tuesday, July 31 | Judging by Professional Judge Kathie Kerler begins at Atonement Lutheran Church at 8:30. Judging is closed to the public and members not signed up. Bed Quilts will be judged this day. | If you signed up to help with judging, you should receive an email reminder. |

Intake/Outtake of Quilts by Pat Laub
Intake: Quilts can be delivered to the Atonement Lutheran Church beginning at 1pm on Monday, July 30th. Quilts will be accepted until 5pm.
Remember to have your hanging sleeve and label attached to your quilt along with the insurance waiver.
Outtake: Quilts can be picked up on Saturday after the Quilt Show. All the quilts will need to be taken down and delivered to the outtake stations before they will be available for pick up. This time may vary between 5pm and 5:30pm. Quilts will not be available before 5pm. Please be patient!
If you are unable to pick up your quilt, the insurance waiver has space to designate who will be picking up your quilt.
The Do’s and Don’ts of Parking and Pickup from Jean Amundson:
Parking at the Rec Center, August 2-4
If you are signed up to help set up the show on August 2, please park well away from the Center unless you have heavy items or large quantities to unload. Then move your vehicle after you’ve unloaded. This helps make space available for others in the same situation . . . Thanks!
On Saturday, please don’t park on Angle Street (the street south of City Hall) at any time until about 2 p.m. We have agreed to set that space aside for Farmer’s Market attendees., and in return they are setting aside all the other City Hall/Recreation Center parking spaces for people at the Rec Center. We have permission to use the parking lot at (former) Phagan’s Beauty School on Saturday, but not on Friday. Again, thanks for your cooperation.
Picking up Your Quilts on Saturday
Please don’t attempt to pick up your quilts on Saturday after the show until about 5 p.m. No one will be allowed into the pickup area in the hallway until all the quilts have been taken down, accounted for, and organized. This is for your safety and the safety of your quilts. Thanks!
Here’s What You Need to Know About the Potluck…
There is a potluck on set up day Thursday August 2, 2018 for workers and the vendors. Even if you are not working, bringing a dish to share will be appreciated as we will be serving about 100 people.
The Rec Center has a stove and a refrigerator for us to use. Crock pots are also welcome. Please deliver food by 11am on Thursday and remember to label your dishes and utensils so we can make sure they are returned to you.
The potluck will be ending about 2pm. The café vendor will begin setting up at 3pm. Any nonperishable food will be in the break room. Perishable food will either be given to the Rec Center staff or thrown away.

But there IS life after the Quilt Show
Guild member Janet Webster is featured speaker
The Coastal Arts Guild (CAG) welcomes their own Janet Webster as speaker for the guild’s Friday, August 3rd luncheon. The luncheon runs from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Newport Visual Arts Center’s 2nd floor classroom/meeting room and invites those interested in the arts to attend. Webster will speak at 11:30.
Janet was a librarian for almost 30 years before retiring in 2015 but throughout her professional career she maintained a deep interest in fabric arts. Her work evolved over time from weaving to quilting. Now she explores the various facets of pieced work and fabric manipulation. As a 5th generation Oregonian, she draws much of her inspiration and imagery from the landscape that surrounds her.

Name This Quilt
2019 Raffle Quilt is almost done and needs a name. Please send suggestions to Jane Szabo, szabojj@peak.org. The committee will choose from suggestions and the winning name entrant will win 18 raffle tickets. The 2019 raffle tickets sales will begin at the NW Quilt Expo in Portland in September.

Community Quilters
So far this year, we have distributed 47 quilts and have 53 completed quilts in inventory. We have given quilts to the following: My Sister’s Place, Samaritan House, Seashore Literacy, Hospice, Calvary Church Soup Kitchen, Children’s Advocacy Center, Dornbecher, Foster Parents, Habitat for Humanity, and several quilts for individuals in crisis.
This is what we need going forward: Queen-sized quilts (for the beds at My Sister’s Place), burp rags, quilts for teen boys, and tote bags with handles size 24X36 or 24X24.
I currently have not been given names of any agencies in Lincoln City that would like to receive our quilts. Please help me out here! I am sure there are needs outside of Newport, but we can’t help if we don’t have their info. Our Lincoln City quilt group has been a BIG contributor of quilts, over 21 since April! I think it would be nice to return some of their beautiful quilts to their community. Thank you, LC Quilters!
SPECIAL SPECIAL! Speaking of thanks, I want to especially thank Jennifer Reinhart, our Featured Quilter this year, who has so generously offered the following to any guild member. If you bring to her booth at the show a completed top and back that would be fitting for a BOY on FRIDAY ONLY, she will quilt it for Community Quilters. She asks that you just bring the top and back on Friday, with your name on it, and then you can bring the batting to the guild meeting on August 9. SOOOO pull out those blues and browns and get those machines buzzin’! Also, please make sure your backing is a minimum 4” larger than the top on all sides.

Finishing School
Finishing School will be meeting on August 23 from 10:00 to 4:00 at the Carriage House at the Lincoln County Historical Museum at 545 SW 9th St., Newport. It is a great time to work on a project without being interrupted. You may bring your machine or hand work we will have an iron there for you to use. You may come at any time and stay as long as you like. Bring a sack lunch or go out whatever you would rather do. It is also a great way to get to know other guild members and get help on a project that you need advice on. Fun time is had by all.

Blog Format
A web blog is designed for quick on-line viewing that just grows as more articles are added over time. However, some of you have asked for a way to print it out without having to sacrifice a forest to make the paper. Look for the link to a “Printer Friendly” version at the bottom of the page. I will try to create a PDF file of the latest version and post it to the web. And under Records/Minutes, if you want to print the minutes, even the latest ones, click on the “Archive” link and print what you need.
Finally – a plea…
I assumed the role of Blog Editor about four months ago when Paula became ill, but I really need someone to step up and use their creativity in this important communication tool. It is not an onerous job, but with my other responsibilities, I just don’t have the time to give it the attention it needs. I have fallen behind in posting pictures of Show and Share for two months now. It takes a little bit of computer skill, but I would be happy to train you and we could work together until you get the hang of it. Please give me a call or send me email … I’m in the Directory.
